Poll Finds Public Support for Gay Athletes

Following NBA player Jason Collins’ public announcement that he is gay, a quarter of Americans, 25 percent, believe having an openly gay athlete is a positive development for society, a new Reason-Rupe poll finds. Seventeen percent say having an active athlete announce he is gay is a negative change for society and 57 percent feel it makes no impact.![]()
An overwhelming number of Americans-87 percent-say their support would not change (77 percent) or would increase (10 percent) if their favorite athlete announced he or she is gay. Just 12 percent say they’d be less likely to support their favorite athlete after learning he or she is gay.
The Reason-Rupe poll conducted live interviews with 1,003 adults on mobile (503) and landline (500) phones from May 9-13, 2013. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.7 percent. Princeton Survey Research Associates International executed the nationwide Reason-Rupe survey.
Pretty Masculine’s Stunning Photos
Mike Ruiz (bodypaint/makeup by Dani Fonseca)

Photos Credit: Mike Ruiz
I love my iPad and really enjoy using it to view beautiful photographs. I am also proud that Wire Magazine works with some of the best photographers in the world. We strive to bring you amazing photos every week in our editorial pursuits. So when I recently learned that celebrity photographer Mike Ruiz launched a new iPad App to transform Pretty Masculine, his very successful coffee table book, into an interactive photographic gallery for the iPad, I decided to find out more about how Mike is offering unprecedented access to his entire creative process.
One very interesting feature is the app’s interactive Studio Section that gives subscribers the ability to upload their own photos and transform them with a Pretty Masculine makeover by adding make-up, lighting effects and accessories from the Pretty Masculine collection to their personal photos and share them via Facebook, Twitter or email. Another nice feature are the behind-the-scenes videos where you can see models morph before your eyes from a blank slate to full body makeup – a great way to see the images come to life.
Mike is also utilizing the Pretty Masculine App to enhance his support of various charitable organizations that include The Ali Forney Center (a homeless shelter for GLBTQ youth), Bullies and Buddies Animal Rescue, GMHC and Green Chimneys. You can download the Pretty Masculine App in the iTunes App store by visiting this link: www.wiremag.co/mikeruizpmapp
Check out what Mike shared with Wire during our recent interview.
Q: Why do you feel it was important as a photographer to give your fans an inside look at your creative process?
A: With technology advancing so rapidly and information being so readily available, I felt that this was the logical progression in bringing art to the public. Also, people want to know everything about everything, and I wanted to give them an experience that goes far beyond just looking at an image. They get a much fuller understanding of what goes into a shoot, down to the history of the model and what inspired the make-up artists.
Q: What are some of the most notable interactive features of the Pretty Masculine App?
A: The most interactive feature is the Pretty Masculine Studio where you can either take your own photo or upload an existing one and customize it using a multitude of elements that I’ve isolated from various images of mine, giving the user the opportunity to really participate in my creative process. Another interactive feature is the ability to link to videos of all sorts – including interviews, behind the scenes and mini-movies of the images coming to life. There are also some really amazing time lapses of the execution of very intricate body art.
Q: Does the app give fans access to exclusive photos not included in the Pretty Masculine book?
A: Absolutely! Of the 120 images and 100 plus videos that appear on the app, only a dozen or so of the images are from the original book. The rest of the content is brand new.
Q: How do you come up with such surreal concepts for the portraits captured for the Pretty Masculine brand?
A: This project has evolved so much from its original form as a book. Artists and models alike have gotten to know Pretty Masculine as a creative opportunity not often encouraged in a single ongoing project. So, people come to it knowing that the sky is the limit as far as conceptualizing shoots is concerned. I allow everyone the freedom to come up with his or her most fantastical ideas and, as long as they adhere to the parameters of strength and empowerment, there really are no creative limits. As a result, I have some of the most talented and creative people converging on my shoots, culminating in a mind-blowing factory of visual stimulation. I feel so elated that I’ve been able to create this amazing environment for people to flourish in.
Q: Tell us about your work with the Ali Forney Center, Bullies and Buddies, GMHC and Green Chimneys and why working with such charitable organizations is so important to you.
A: The reason I became a photographer is so that I could create a better world for myself (aesthetically, anyway) and as I’ve manifested many wonderful things in my own life, I’ve come to see that my desire to create a better world doesn’t stop with photography. It’s so easy to pay it forward and I draw so much gratification from doing so.
Q: Aside from The Pretty Masculine App, how else can fans donate to these charitable causes that are very important to you?
A: There are direct links to several charities directly from my app and people can educate themselves and spread the word about the work that these organizations do.
Q: What’s next for Mike Ruiz? Do you have any major photography projects in the works that you would like to share with our readers?
A: I’m collaborating with a menswear designer to create a line of rock & roll inspired menswear. It’s called “Mike Ruiz for J. Cheikh” and I am very proud of the pieces we have created together. I also have my line of t-shirts showcasing several images from the Pretty Masculine series. Both are available at Any Old Iron in NYC and at anyoldiron.net.
As for shoots, I have a few things in the works but it’s all hush-hush for now (grins).
Q: What was the inspiration behind Pretty Masculine, both the book and app?
A: My initial idea for the book was to deconstruct gender stereotypes specifically with men and as the app has evolved, it has grown to include women.
Q: What do you want your fans to take away from being able to see inside your creative process?
A: I just want people to have a richer experience and better understanding of what goes into the creation of photography and hopefully to be inspired, somehow.
Q: Do you feel technology has allowed artists and photographers to push the boundaries of their creations? How?
A: It most certainly has. With a tap of a screen, one can now enter the world of the artist through a myriad of digital portals. It really brings the gallery experience home. It’s quite remarkable to invite people to participate in what you do by means of a handheld device.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers?
A: Yes, I want everyone to try to do one act of kindness every day. That is the key to success and the road happiness.

Ahoy! Modern Luxury on the High Seas

By Rafa Carvajal
Images Provided by Celebrity Cruises
PortMiami has been known for a long time as the “Cruise Capital of the World.” Our port is also expected to experience significant growth over the next 12 months as a host of new cruise brands and newly built ships, considered to be among some of the most innovative vessels in the world, make Miami their home. One of those ships is Celebrity Cruises new Reflection – a true modern luxury hotel that travels on the high seas while providing the best the cruise industry has to offer in terms of lodging, dining, entertainment, and art.
Jesse Spencer, Associate Publisher of Wire Magazine, and I sailed on Reflection for its inaugural voyage in the United States after the ship traveled from its birth-site in Germany to Miami.. If you like the finer things in life, the Solstice Class ships from Celebrity Cruises that was named “Best Cruise Ships” by Frommer’s 2011, and Reflection, in particular, offer a modern luxury vacation unlike any other cruise line I have ever been on. This year Celebrity Cruises was also named “The Most Gay-Friendly Cruise Line” from the Meet Me Onboard annual Members’ Choice Awards. I consider this the perfect staycation because we did not have to go very far to enjoy an amazing vacation. The beauty of this type of staycation is that the hotel happens to float on the ocean and goes to many beautiful ports of call before bringing you back to our Magic City a few days later.
Little did I imagine during my five months at sea as a young Coast Guard Academy cadet, that one day I would experience my love of sailing on the high seas in such luxury as Reflection. Long gone were my sailor days sleeping in cramped bunk-beds, washing dishes, cooking in a hot galley, polishing brass fixtures, or scraping paint. They were replaced by a spacious, luxury cabin with mouth-watering fine dining alternatives, first-class entertainment, cocktails, gambling, spa pampering, and stunning art throughout the ship. Reflection was designed with very roomy, stylish interiors, delightful and artistic dining experiences, personalized service that includes a guest-to-staff ratio of nearly 2:1; and many unexpected, trendsetting activities onboard that will make for a very unique vacation experience. I’d like to share some of what you can look forward to when planning a fantastic modern luxury vacation on a brand new cruise liner.

There are two great alternatives to cruise on Reflection. The first one, during the winters of 2012 and 2013 is a seven-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary with ports-of-call that include San Juan, Puerto Rico; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Basseterre, St. Kitts; and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. If you prefer to travel across the pond and sail in Europe, you can choose a 10 and 11 night Eastern Mediterranean cruise during the summer of 2013 with a roundtrip out of Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy. The Mediterranean ports-of-call include Santorini, Athens (Piraeus), Rhodes and Mykonos, Greece; Istanbul and Ephesus (Kusadasi), Turkey; as well as Sicily (Messina) and Naples, Italy.
Our AquaClass stateroom was very modern, luxurious, and spacious, with an oceanview balcony, and a very roomy bathroom with a full size shower that included water jets. I have vacationed on several cruises before and this is by far the best stateroom I have ever stayed in. If you prefer to enjoy the “Suite Life,” Reflection offers three new, unique, and very luxurious suite categories. At the very top of the heap is The Reflection Suite: a two-bedroom, 1,636-square-foot suite with a breathtaking view from its 194-square-foot wraparound veranda and a distinctive all-glass shower extending out over the edge of the 3,030-guest ship. This stunning six-guest suite is nestled in a private area of the ship’s 14th deck with exclusive cardkey access, over the bridge and bow, along with the new Signature Suites – giving you amazing forward views of any port of call. The five Signature Suites offer a 441-square-foot stateroom area and 118-square-foot veranda, with floor-to-ceiling windows and veranda doors, and amazing views of the sea. Each suite accommodates up to four guests, and includes luxurious 24/7 butler service – a hallmark of every suite across the Celebrity fleet. The AquaClass Suites are spa-inspired staterooms that take the onboard spa experience to the suite level with 300-square-foot interiors and spacious 79-square-foot verandas. They include all the amenities associated with Celebrity’s luxurious suite treatment and its AquaClass accommodations, including exclusive and complimentary access to Blu, Reflection’s Mediterranean-themed specialty restaurant.
All these suites also offer some very sweet dreams with the Reverie® Dream Sleep System™ premium mattress that allows guests to customize the firmness of their beds with exclusive technology that enables Apple products equipped with the Reverie Remote app to act as a remote control that operates massage features, adjusts the elevation of the mattress and turns your suite’s appliances that are connected to a power outlet, on or off. You can enjoy this innovative technology with the iPad provided in each of the suites, which also can be used to control your TV and lights.

I love fine dining, so I particularly enjoyed the broad range of fine dining experiences that Reflection has to offer – along with very high quality regular dining that far exceeded the dining experiences I had on other cruise vacations. Several restaurants were created by world-renowned designer Adam Tihany, and I particularly enjoyed Reflection’s specialty restaurants offering unique menus and diverse dining experiences. Qsine is a one-of-a-kind restaurant featuring a “uniquely unordinary” approach to dining with food that is artfully presented. It was also the world’s first restaurant to have its menu and wine list presented to everyone on iPads. Murano offers a delectable, multi-course meal featuring a blend of classic and modern continental cuisine, with many selections prepared tableside for a truly spectacular experience. Tuscan Grille is a sophisticated steakhouse and specialty grill experience restaurant that provides the ultimate cruising grill experience. We also dined at Blu, as it is open to AquaClass stateroom guests. The menu featured fresh, flavorful and lighter fare in a stunning setting that reminded me of the true luxury on the high seas. I particularly loved the Creamy Pea and Morel Mushroom Risotto with mascarpone cheese and chervil; Pan Seared Australian Sea Bass with crispy artichokes, smoked tomato coulis, arugula and garlic confit; and Crispy Tulip Basket low-fat frozen yogurt with fresh berries for dessert.
The Lawn Club Grill is an outdoor, interactive grill venue overlooking the beautiful, lush lawn area and surrounding sea. You can relax topside with a casual lunch menu that includes a variety of high-end burgers; you can also attend cooking classes on pizza making, grilling secrets, marinades and more. You have the choice of top-quality meats to grill yourself side-by-side Celebrity’s chefs or have them grilled to order – a truly unique foodie experience. We particularly enjoyed a very special dinner on the Lawn Club Grill prepared by Jeff McInnis, Executive Chef of Yardbird in Miami Beach. This was one of the best dinners I’ve had in my life. Highlights included the Flatbread with smoked chicken, artichoke, grilled baby leeks, collard green pesto, and housemade ricotta; Tomahawk Rib Eye, carved tableside with YB-1 steak sauce, grilled Trumpet and Hen of the Woods mushrooms; Shrimp ‘n’ Grits with Florida shrimp, crisp Virginia ham, and Adluh South Carolina stone-ground grits; Truffle Mash potatoes with Parsnip, celery root, and potato puree; and Chocolate Mississippi Mud Pie for dessert.

A few other dining and libation choices you may enjoy include the Bistro on Five vibrant creperie; the Molecular Bar serving handcrafted cocktails made with foams, ice spheres, and liquid nitrogen by Junior Merino, The Liquid Chef, a master of the art of Molecular Mixology – with a musical mood that is fresh from lounge to house; the ice-topped Martini Bar, featuring a selection of chilled, top-tier vodkas, paired with Crush, a VIP-like lounge area that is perfect to hang out at with friends or that special someone; the Enomatic wine bar with a state-of-the-art, Italian-designed wine serving system that allows you to select and serve wines of your choice by the glass at the touch of a button; and the ‘cool’ Café al Bacio and Gelateria, where we enjoyed some delightful cappuccinos and gelatos.
If you enjoy the best in spa service and fitness, Reflection has a lot of offer. You can be pampered in their beautiful spa with a wide array of world-renowned services that range from Bamboo Massages and 24K Gold Facials to a full Medi-Spa and acupuncture. Reflection has a stunning, thematic art collection that must be admired as you move about the ship. Just as the art collection across all of Celebrity’s Solstice Class ships, Reflection’s relates to a theme based on the ship’s name. As International Corporate Art’s Mariangela Capuzzo says, they “intentionally present an alternative to the ‘white cube’ museum surroundings in which most of us have become accustomed to experiencing art, and seek to inspire both the guest and the artist by allowing for greater creative possibilities in all of the ship’s spaces.” The upper Grand Foyer of Reflection, with its own living tree, has become an iconic symbol of every Solstice Class ship. The tree – the metaphorical heart of the ship – lives in a stunning artist-designed vessel suspended mid-air in the ship’s atrium. On Reflection, Bert Rodriguez’s “Reflections” – crafted of steel, fiberglass and paint with LED lights – has metallic roots that seem to draw life as well as give it, while merging with the ship’s gorgeous architecture.

In the dining corridor you can admire Anthony James’ “Birch” sculpture with a never-ending vision of birch tree trunks, Albano Alfonso’s “From the Forest Series,” where the reflective properties of the murals mirror shapes as if walking through the very forest you are viewing, Mary Tsiongas’ video, “Vanish #3,” that adds mystery to your surroundings, and Dutch designer Jurgen Bey’s “Tree Trunk Bench” which allows you to sit upon a tree trunk and experience this unique space in a very tactile way. The Ensemble vestibule was designed by artist Carlos Betancourt and Alberto Latorre with a dreamlike photographic collage of mixed media, stainless steel and sound. The floor tiles, ceiling, furniture and sound element composed the magical art piece “The Celestial Garden,” created by the artist. There are many other stunning, thematic artworks on Reflection that include: Jeff Koons’ stainless steel “Mirror Flower” sculpture, highlighting the point at which mass-produced kitsch and contemporary narcissism intersect; Ann Veronica Janssen’s gilded “Venetian Blinds”; Thomas Simm’s cartoony “Big Bloom,” sculpture of polyurethane and red carpet in the Oceanview Cafe; and the huge “The World is a Looking Glass” by Austrian Norbert Brunner, featuring two pair of mesmerizing eyes with the quote, “the world is a looking glass so be certain you are smiling,” that captivates you while you relax in the ship’s beautiful library.
Reflection also offers an extensive, first rate entertainment program that includes live stage productions ranging from Vegas and Broadway-style shows to circus-style shows, live music by Jazz bands, classic trios, contemporary party bands, guitarists, percussionists, DJs, and very funny comedians. We particularly enjoyed a fabulous Broadway-inspired review of the Great White Way’s best shows, and a Cirque-du-Soleil-like rock music extravaganza that kept me on the edge of my seat as aerial performers and acrobats thrilled the audience. If you are looking to do something unique and different during your vacation, Reflection and its sister ships offer you Celebrity Life – a wide variety of unique, enriching and entertaining activities.
The Celebrity Life specialty programming brings modern luxury to life through onboard hands-on experiences in culinary arts, learning, wellness and entertainment. You can enjoy “Champagne High Tea” in the afternoon with impeccable service, fine bone china, and a string quartet playing in the background. You can attend the “Star Chefs Cooking Competition,” where two Celebrity chefs and guests from the audience put their skills to work for the best-chef honors of the day. If you are interested in “chef-inspired” bartending and mixology or wine activities you may enjoy “Mixology 101,” and “Molecular Mixology,” “Wine Appreciation 101,” the “Riedel® Comparative Wine Crystal Workshop” and the “Food and Wine Pairing” hosted in Cellar Masters. You can also take a “Celebrity iLearn,” custom-designed course featuring Apple software or attend a “Beyond the Podium Speaker Series” featuring Smithsonian Journeys on select sailings. Rosetta Stone language lessons are offered in 13 different languages, shake your booty at the “Let’s Dance” series, or attend hands-on art classes and lectures at The Art Studio on the top deck – taught by two artists-in-residence from The ArtCenter South Florida, including jewelry-making and painting.

Be sure to stop by the “Lawn Club,” an outdoor venue reminiscent of a country club that features a lawn of real grass where you can practice your putting skills, play lawn games like croquet and lawn bowling, or simply relax under the sun and stars. You can also enjoy the first Hot Glass Show at sea, presented in collaboration with The Corning Museum of Glass, which features professional glassblowers working in a custom-designed, outdoor glassblowing studio. In addition, Celebrity Reflection offers a new, whimsical “Game On” venue that features six 32-inch touchscreen tables with structured tournaments with a variety of interactive games designed to engage memory, attention and creativity using the latest technology. You can sing karaoke by choosing from over 1,700 songs or enter casino tournaments and lessons featuring blackjack, slots, poker, roulette or craps. You can also play interactive video games that include virtual bowling, tennis, boxing, darts and more or play outside sports, including basketball, golf putting and ping pong.
So remember, if you are looking for a modern luxury vacation you don’t have to go to far. PortMiami and Celebrity Cruises’ Reflection are just around the corner. Ahoy! Sail away…

Building and Protecting Your Nest Egg
by Rafa Carvajal
The State of Florida and the federal government do not recognize same sex marriages or domestic partnerships, therefore same-sex couples do not have the same tax, retirement, and overall financial benefits as their straight counterparts and could end up paying a very hefty price if they do not plan ahead to protect themselves. This week we caught up to Sue Perez of Morgan Stanley, who will hold a financial planning seminar on protecting LGBT families at the Miami Beach Gay and Lesbian Visitor Center on Thursday, December 6th at 4 p.m.
Why should Wire Magazine’s readers attend your upcoming financial planning seminar on protecting LGBT families to be held at the Miami Beach Gay & Lesbian Visitor Center? Most people put planning on the back burner because there are more pressing matters currently happening in their lives. This is a critical mistake. For the LGBT community this can be a costly and devastating mistake. Attending my seminar will help couples understand the potential issues they can face and how to protect themselves and their partners.
What are the main topics that you will discuss in your seminar? The main topic discussed is the need for financial and estate planning for domestic partners. We will cover the potential issues that may arise from not planning, current laws that make planning essential and steps that can be taken to take control and ensure you and your partner are protected.
How can families protect themselves and build a financial nest egg for retirement, even though the State of Florida and the federal government do not recognize same sex marriage or domestic partnerships? It would be easier if domestic partnerships were viewed as legal marriages but even if they were, planning is a must. Although the state does not recognize same sex marriage, couples can create a plan that will completely protect them and ultimately their wishes. By implementing things such as a will, trust, comprehensive financial plan, long-term care, health surrogate, power of attorney, etc. couples can make certain their assets are protected and save adequately for retirement. Financial planning for couples is key because if one partner was to pass there are no spousal benefits from social security. It is imperative to create a retirement plan that takes into consideration the possibility of household income loss.
What are the top three recommendations you would give same sex couples about their financial planning, given that they do not have the same tax, retirement, and overall financial benefits as their straight counterparts? Create a plan together that covers not only income but long term care as well. Too many people think they do not need long-term care because at the time they feel they will not get sick. The truth is people are living longer and the probability that at some point they will need long term care is rising. Paying for long-term care out of pocket can deplete a couple’s retirement savings and life savings.
Make sure the financial plan takes tax consequences into consideration. Have your advisor work with your CPA and attorney to structure your assets in a way that will reduce your tax liability.
Plan early. Planning early can be the difference between outliving your money or your money outliving you. Relying on social security for retirement is not enough. It is critical to have a self-funded retirement plan. You can utilize your 401K for your retirement, but that may still not be enough to cover your expenses. Planning early will put you on the right track to save the necessary amount to retire comfortably.
Can you explain your background and expertise in the financial planning field? I am currently with Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, a leading global financial services firm offering a wide range of investment banking, securities, investment management and wealth management services. With over 25 years of experience my team provides clients with honest, professional and proven wealth building strategies, which have resulted in productive and long-lasting business relationships.
Are there any specific products or services that Morgan Stanley offers to same sex couples to help them achieve benefits similar to those offered under the law to straight couples? We have products that are tailored to same sex couples. My team also specializes in customizing products and services to fit the needs of same sex couples.
What are the most important areas of financial planning that most domestic partners often do not know? Most domestic partners do not know that they can create guaranteed lifetime income for themselves and their partners. Another important aspect of planning is titling assets correctly and designating beneficiaries. Most couples are not aware or forget the importance of designating their partners as their beneficiaries on their accounts, including retirement accounts. If assets are not titled correctly and beneficiaries are not designated your partner has no legal rights to those assets upon your death.
Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine’s readers regarding your financial planning recommendations and how to protect themselves? It is important to have a good team that is willing to work together. Have your financial advisor attend your meetings with your estate attorney. Have your financial advisor consult with your CPA on tax related matters. They all work for you and if they work together you will have a complete plan that effectively covers all your financial and estate planning needs.
Reveling At the Palace White Sunset Block Party
Every year during the height of White Party Week, the streets are shut down at 12th Street & Ocean Drive, galvanizing beats fill the air, hundreds of alluring men flood the streets and Palace Bar delivers a momentous block party nothing short of unforgettable. This year, Jerry Torres, owner of Stereo Entertainment, alongside Palace will bring you its annual block party that correlates directly with White Party 2012’s theme of RESET; bringing you even bigger productions and performances. Don’t miss another stellar Palace block party sure to keep everyone’s body moving.
Wire got the inside scoop about this year’s party from Jerry Torres.
Describe the Palace White Party block party. What should guests look forward to? Since The Palace began producing these mega-block parties, the caliber of production, performers, and DJs gets better and better. This year, the White Sunset T-Dance is better than ever with refreshing drinks, good-looking people from all over the world, amazing music and a show that will leave you breathless. The best part - THERE’S NO COVER! It really is the place where White Party regulars, locals, and out-of-towners come together.
What kind of live entertainment will be showcased this year at White Sunset T? We have designed a spectacular show for the White Sunset T Dance on 12th Street, looking at every single detail from costume production to choreography, with aerial dancers, special effects, go-go dancers, drag queens and two amazing DJs. You will not want to miss this party.
Why do you think Palace’s block parties are so successful, not only during White Party Week but during other events such as Winter Party and Winter Music Conference? It takes a lot of hard work to produce a block party, and we work with one of the best audio and visual companies in the state, hire some of the best entertainers, and always think of our guests’ experience. At the end of the day, they are what make the party successful. No one does a block party the way The Palace does a block party and that is evident in every detail of the event.
How did you select the talent for White Sunset T Dance? I listened to our guests and carefully picked what I thought would be the hottest DJ combination: DJ Cindel and DJ Jalil Z. Both of them have a great following and the type of energy that will resonate easily with revelers. These two DJs will make sure you dance until you can’t dance anymore.
How will White Sunset T differ from previous block party productions that Palace has done? We have created a new concept for this block party. I personally designed and selected the staging, shows and costumes, and we are taking the entertainment to a whole new dimension with special props, and aerial & pole dancers, something that has never been seen at The Palace before.
What are your suggestions for those who want to beat the crowd and attend Sunday Brunchic? Your best bet is to make reservations, we have a fabulous show planned and we always sell out in advance.
Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine’s readers? I’m very excited for the Sunset T-dance and cant wait for all of you to experience what we have in store for you. Remember this is a free event and its located on Ocean Dr and 12 St, the event starts at noon on Saturday, November 24. Happy Thanksgiving and White Party Week!

TANTALIZING THERESA: A Sitdown With Wire

By Antwyone Ingram
Check out what DJ Theresa had to say about hitting the wheels of steel for this year’s White Paradise T Pool Party.
Q: How does it feel to be returning to Miami to spin for one of your largest fan-bases? A: Miami is the best place on Earth! Granted, I am a bit biased as it’s my hometown, and growing up in Miami Beach has MAJORLY influenced my sound. The real reason I love parties in Miami, is because of the energy and hunger for tribal music. Regardless of the heavily predominant Latin culture, people near the beach like to have more fun.
Q: Can guests anticipate hearing new material from you during White Party’s White Paradise T Pool Party? A: My guests can always have a general idea of what I will be playing. I like to keep my sound consistent and push my own productions (by the way, you can find most of them on my SoundCloud page). Generally, before new shows, I like to have completed at least 3-5 new original mixes, mashups, or edits to keep the sound fresh from what’s already accessible online. I have a podcast on iTunes/Podomatic which showcases 50 minute snips of my live sets; generally the earlier parts of the set. However, one thing guests will NEVER know is the live mixing surprises. Also, with longer sets I can really take you on a journey. I guess it really all depends on the crowd and set length. With pool parties, I generally like to keep it lighter, but who knows what mood I’ll be in… Everything is improvised at the end of the day, but my sound is always consistent.
Q: How does performing in Miami compare to performing in other cities and countries across the world? Is there a different energy? A: Performing in my hometown is like performing for my family and friends. I can get away with anything – and God knows that’s a DJ’s dream come true. There tends to be, I wouldn’t say an energy gap (my goal is to have everyone’s hands in the air regardless of what city I’m in), but in Miami, there is a more festive vibe. Warmer cities tend to be that way. Like I said earlier, people on the beach want to have fun. And Latin people – I’m not even going to go there! They are of my own flesh and blood.
Q: What’s next for DJ Theresa for the remainder of the year? A: Major major major things, especially from a production standpoint. I don’t want to give it all away just yet, but when we launch, we will launch with a BANG. What I will say is that Hector Fonseca and Billy Lace are partners of mine in this new endeavor. I love them by the way.
Q: How does it feel to be a female DJ among a roster of predominantly male circuit DJs, and do you feel there is more pressure on you as a female DJ to deliver exceptional music? A: I’ve never identified myself as a female DJ, nor has the female aspect ever been a driving force for me. I’m just a DJ, and I want to be compared to all DJs not just the female ones. There’s no difference – either you can play music or you can’t. Regardless of being female, I always feel pressure to deliver exceptional music. I love what I do, but I think of this like a business and how important brand consistency is. DJ Theresa always has to kill it, and I like that challenge. So aside from scenes that are male, female, gay, or straight, my goal is to always deliver the best music.
Q: What do you love the most about spinning in Miami? A: Truthfully? That I get to see my mom and dad before my gigs every time I fly down! They are my heart, my soul and my reason for everything.
Q: Is there anything you would like to share with Wire Magazine’s readers? A: I’d love to share a lot of things, but I will share the following: Thank you for reading this. I want you to know that because of you, I have the opportunity to show the world what I do best –and that is a blessing above all things. This is not a competition for me, nor a way to prove myself to other DJs that I am a female and I can keep up. I do this because I love music, and I love watching people enjoying life.
So much basic enjoyment of living is lost with the pressures we have every day from just living on this earth. Music is such an accessible and basic form of recreation that can release tension and make us feel good. I love music so much that I still spend endless hours in my studio and traveling all over the world to share that one aspect of music even while working full time in Capital Markets banking. At one point this year, I was getting my masters degree, working full time and Djing. That’s a lot of love for the music, and that’s never going away.

If Vas Bet’s TWIST Walls Could Talk

by Antwyone Ingram & Rafa Carvajal

If you’ve ever spent an evening at TWIST, there is a chance the murals have caught your attention, or reminded you of traveling to a beautiful rainforest when spending time in Bar 5. Have you ever wondered who painted the vivid zebra print, leopard print, and “Latin Jungle” that surrounds you? Wire Magazine catches up with Vas, the artistic mastermind behind TWIST’s most picturesque artwork.
Q: Tell us about the murals you created within TWIST and what kind of feel you were trying to accomplish with each.
A: It all started over three years ago when I was introduced to Richard Trainor, one of the owners of TWIST. He told me that every year at least one of seven TWIST bars goes through a complete makeover. Fairly soon I was asked to paint a zebra-skin motif, I thought it was a great idea, very fitting for a nightclub. I took time to meditate, to internalize the rhythms - and painted it all in one long night. I like to paint fast, allowing images to flow through me, I enter into a kind of trance, I relax and try not to think too much - it feels like the best work results from attaining and holding a state of effortlessness. Naturally, it takes work and concentration to reach this state. The next was a leopard skin bar that ended up spilling all over the walls and ceilings, filling the space with loosely interpreted tiger stripes in different scales and colors. Finally, there was my dream project. Richard came up with the theme “Latin Jungle” and when I heard it, I was close to levitating.
It was a serious challenge: two and a half thousand square feet of walls and ceilings in a nightclub with an opening date set and fast approaching. Then, during preparation I also thought of designing light fixtures, and sconces in the shape of Monstera leaves. More excitement, more work. I chose dark grey as background and painted vegetation stepping out of the darkness as if around a campfire at night in the woods. Then I went totally over the top with highlights - it’s a nightclub and the Jungle is “Latin.”
Q: What is the meaning of the murals you painted?
A: Pantheism, Pagan sense of wonder, the dazzling sexiness of the tropics and the curiosity about what is hidden from view. For me, forests and jungles were the first cathedrals of humanity.
Q: What influence has living in London, Rio De Janeiro, and finally Miami made on your work?
A: Immense. My world opened up, I was immersed in diverse cultures and languages; for me it is impossible to overstate the benefits. Moscow was a great springboard, Rio was an effective cure for London’s winters - and Miami seems profoundly agreeable to me. Aren’t we quite lucky to have a mixture of everything here?
Q: To date, what is your favorite creation and why?
A: I love painting murals in private homes and I have done many that I will always remember with tenderness. There was a sliding door with a view painted on both sides, night view on one side - same view in daytime on the other side. That was fun, as was working with UV activated pigments and lighting effects that turned a mural into a 24-hour cycle. As to my favorite - at the moment it is TWIST’s “Latin Jungle.” It was unusual, challenging and tremendously enjoyable. I did not want it to stop, I went on adding to it for six weeks after the opening night, then I painted two tables at home in a similar manner - my wife was very pleased!
Q: Which mural took the longest to paint and where is it located?
A: I have done large-scale work in two shopping malls in Rio, two sports clubs and a number of casinos, but the TWIST jungle is probably the one that took the most time and effort to-date. My other murals can be found on-line at www.art2good.com
Q: How/Why did you end up painting the murals at TWIST?
A: It all happened because of wonderful ideas of Richard Trainer and the trust he had shown me.
Q: Did you have any interest in art prior to studying architecture at the Minsk Architectural College?
A: I consider myself lucky; I knew I was an artist very early. As a child, I often used to stop and draw with my finger in the air, just for a few seconds at a time. I remember well how it felt - a sudden intense desire to give form to a specific shape, a rhythm - seconds later I was free to resume playing.
Q: What made you choose art versus going into architecture?
A: Office politics. I enjoyed making paper architecture as a student, but the prospect of becoming an architect never really appealed to me. Before graduation I went through three months of practical training. I learned about the importance of office politics as well as my lack of enthusiasm for it. On another level, I always wanted to study painting, but in the Soviet Union it was one of the most sought after professions. This might sound strange to Americans. Studying art and then being an artist was seen as one of the few ways of escaping the drab reality of rigid state control in most aspects of life. I was urged by my family not to waste time - they were certain I stood no chance of getting in. But after graduating as an architect, I realized, I would never be happy unless I tried; It took me five years and it was worth it. I was ecstatic for months and years; finally I was studying art in a great university, it was exhilarating!
Q: What is your favorite work of art and why?
A: Quantum mechanics. It’s utterly fascinating.
Q: Was there ever a moment in your life that changed your perspective of art?
A: There were many. When I saw Chagall’s canvases, when I read 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and when I heard Penderecki’s “The Demons of Loudun.”
Q: Do you feel it is harder for an artist to survive solely on his/her art in this day in time?
A: I rather do. Though my point of reference is unusual. 25 years ago it was really easy to live as an artist in the old Soviet Union. I had a job painting propaganda posters; it took me on average two days to do all that was required of me in a month, and I was paid as if I worked every day. I had more free time than I knew what to do with. And in the ‘80s there was a lot of creative freedom. One could indulge, study obscure subjects, have endless conversations - I don’t think many Americans know the taste of freedom that comes from having lots of free time. Yet we thought of ourselves as somehow oppressed. Real freedom was to be found in the West.
Q: Do you have any upcoming major projects or murals that you are working on?
A: I am always looking for projects. When there is nothing concrete on the horizon, I invent my own projects, I paint some canvases, I potter around in the garden, I go fishing - but there are always visual ideas, turning around in the back of my mind.

The Beauty of La bohéme and Much More!

By Rafa Carvajal and Antwyone Ingram

One of the world’s most notable operas and heartfelt love stories is ready to enlighten Miami audiences with a truly extraordinary experience. La bohéme, a masterpiece conceived by Giacomo Puccini, has captivated innumerable audiences the world over with a truly riveting story of young love and passion.
Wire Magazine catches up with one of the most powerful voices of the decade, leading man of La bohéme and Mexican operatic tenor, Arturo Chacón Cruz. Playing the role of Rodolfo, Arturo’s voice tells a story with unfathomable power, beauty, and youthfulness.
Q: Our readers love the musical Rent, which was inspired by La bohéme. Why do you think they should come see this timeless opera?
A: I can tell you what captivates me about La bohéme. This opera has music that moves me and triggers so many feelings in my soul. Rarely have I heard music so well written and so appropriately set to each character. I still get goosebumps, even after so many productions I have done. There is something really magical about this score. If we talk about the drama, well, here you will find out why it has stood the test of time, and has inspired J. Larson to write Rent. This is a real life story; one most people can relate to. I will venture this much and tell you that La bohéme has as much in common with real life as Rent in our century and current society. It is a story of happiness, love, and the real tragedy of life.
Q: Please tell our readers how La bohéme inspires you.
A: When I started to pursue my career as a singer, I had to share a small apartment with four other people. We struggled to make rent, pay the bills, and so forth. However, I had the time of my life! This opera takes me back and makes me relive some of those moments. Added to the drama of Mimi’s illness and extreme poverty, I am moved to tears on every performance. Often I am greeted by (still) crying audience members after the show, and they thank me and my colleagues for making them feel our story. This is very rewarding and the reason I got into this career to begin with.
Q: How has your life changed since winning Operalia in 2005?
A: Operalia was a catalyst for my career. I had already started singing in some major opera houses in the U.S., but Operalia expanded my horizons to Europe and Asia, multiplying my number of performances and it did a great deal to present me to the world as a “validated” opera singer. Also, it strengthened my relationship with Maestro Plácido Domingo, to whom I owe so much. He has been an inspiration and a great mentor in my life and career.
Q: What was it like to be mentored by legendary tenors Plácido Domingo and Ramón Vargas?
A: What can I say? I feel like I am the luckiest guy alive. I admire both of them tremendously. Each one of them had something unique to offer me in their mentoring. Ramon Vargas has become like a brother to me. We still, to this day, work on vocal technique and he advises me professionally. Maestro Domingo has continued to offer his advice and he has recommended me on several occasions to opera companies. I’ve also had the opportunity to sing with him onstage and worked with him as he conducted from the podium.
Q: Growing up, who were some of your musical influences and how did they inspire you?
A: Pedro Infante, Vicente Fernandez, Pedro Vargas and Javier Solís inspired me. Their voices and style of singing, amazingly, are not too far from operatic singing.
Q: What was it like performing for His and Her Majesties the King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia of Spain? Were you nervous?
A: It was sort of unreal! Yes, I was nervous, but also very excited. I did a program of around 55 minutes. After that, I bowed, and went to my assigned room (in the Palace of El Pardo). Soon after, one of the security staff came to get me. I assumed it was to take me to my cab, to go back to my hotel. Boy, was I surprised when they took me to the sitting room, where both the King and Queen received me and we had a lovely 15 minute conversation. They are such lovely people. They treated me so kindly; I shall remember that day for a very long time.
Q: You have performed in a plethora of shows worldwide. Which was the most challenging for you and why?
A: I had a great challenge embodying Hoffmann in Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann. This is not only a very vocally challenging piece, but also, the character is very complex. In preparation for my debut in the role four years ago, I took extra acting lessons and prepared myself vocally with many months of anticipation. This proved to be the right thing to do. To date, I have performed seven productions of The Tales of Hoffmann, the latest being in two of the most prestigious theaters in Europe - La Scala, in Milan, and in Theater an der Wien, in Vienna.
Q: In what parts of the world do you feel audiences are more receptive, or does it depend on the show?
A: It does depend on the show. There are also many theatres where people are used (and encouraged) not to clap or interrupt the show, especially in Italy. I am glad to say, that here in the U.S., audiences are one of the most receptive and enthusiastic. I have noticed around the world a better reception when we have an audience that doesn’t get opera very often or that are relatively new to it. I think it has to do with the shock of liking opera, and the realization that this was actually FUN to hear and watch.
Q: How does it feel to have such a strong support base, not only from your fans, but your critics?
A: I feel blessed and thankful to have so many people follow my career and my life. I strive to be unique and to give them the best I can. We cannot please everybody, since we all have our likes and dislikes. I work very hard to maintain my instrument in the best shape possible. I take this very seriously, and I am grateful to all the critics who appreciate my work. Sometimes, it’s saddening to sacrifice as much as I do, being away from home 11 months out of the year, and to give it all to an audience to receive a mean and non-constructive review.
Q: Did you ever imagine your operatic career would be as big as it is today?
A: No, I didn’t. I wanted to sing and to grow into the lyric repertoire that I am singing currently. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d be where I am now. I have a very supportive team behind me that has been encouraging me for many years now. I owe it all to them - my wife, my parents, my in-laws, and of course, my dear coaches and mentors.
Q: What upcoming roles will you be starring in during early 2013?
A: I start with Pinkerton (Munich). After that, I take on a very exciting Verdi role, Gabriele Adorno, from Simon Boccanegra (Sweden). Then, I continue with a couple of productions of Rigoletto (The Duke) in France (directed by Robert Carsen) and later in Mexico in the Teatro Bicentenario with my friend Maria Alejandres and George Petean.
Q: What advice can you give to young tenors who wish to follow in your footsteps one day?

A: I would encourage them to pursue acting classes as much as singing. Also to try and stay in shape, since we live in a “Hollywood” world, and people want to see actors fit the part (no pun intended). Also, to have patience, our voices mature slowly, and also, our life experience will enrich the roles we play. There is no reason to rush into repertory, that only age will transmit true to the audience. Always think of them, before you think of yourself.
La bohéme. Presented by Florida Grand Opera. Opening Night Saturday, November 17, 2012, 7 p.m. Ziff Ballet Opera House. www.fgo.org
AQUAMEN Beach House & Pool Party

Serving as a funding catalyst for the LBT wellness and equality in South Florida, the Aqua Foundation for Women is ready to open their arms for the gents. The foundation is gearing up for the AQUAMEN Beach House and Pool Party on November 10th, a co-ed event aimed to get men involved and show support for the Aqua Foundation for Women while bringing the community together, as male and female interaction is generally very minimal. Wire Magazine catches up with Executive Director of AFW, Robin Schwartz to get the latest on the upcoming pool soiree, as well as the future of AQUAMEN and why she feels it is important to bring the community together.
What influenced your decision to have a co-ed pool party for your foundation – that primarily serves woman? We want more men to be involved and support Aqua Foundation for Women. We love to spend time with the guys. Too often in our community the men and the women socialize separately. Aqua wants to be a leader in bringing everyone together.
Can we anticipate seeing anymore AQUAMEN events in the near future? We expect we will have more AQUAMEN events but we don’t have the next one planned yet.
What can guests expect at the AQUAMEN Beach House & Pool Party? Guests can expect to be in a beautiful setting where they can party or relax. There will be awesome music. Great drinks donated by Bacardi, and a silent auction.
How did you select your talent for the event? DJ Brett Hendrichson is internationally known and very popular with the guys. DJ Pride is an Aqua favorite.
Are there any opportunities to volunteer for this event, or upcoming Aqua Foundation events? Absolutely. We welcome volunteers. They are a huge part of Aqua Foundation. Anyone who is interested can go to our website at www.aquafoundation.org and sign up to volunteer. If someone is interested in volunteering for AQUAMEN I suggest sending an email directly to me since it is so close. My email is Robin@aquafoundation.org.
Why do you feel it is important to reach out to the men in the LGBT community? We are all one community and Aqua wants to encourage LGBT women and men and our allies to support each other. We currently have many male members and we are reaching out to get more involved.
Are there any plans to expand the Aqua Foundation to cater to the needs of men? Aqua Foundation was created because we saw a crucial gap in support and leadership for lLBT women. This will remain our focus. We do have a new initiative that will focus on youth, which will impact both young men and women. Aqua will provide funding to assist LGBT youth who are homeless.
Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine’s readers? All the proceeds from AQUAMEN will go directly to the Aqua Foundation for Women. This year we have provided 15 scholarships and mentors and will award $50,000 in grants to South Florida non-profit organizations. Aqua will continue these important programs as well as other services such as our annual Transgender Conference, TransCon, our LGBT family barbeque and events that build community. Guys and gals… join us at AQUAMEN… a good time for a good cause! Ticket information can be found at www.aquafoundation.org/tickets
