Is Print Dead?
By Rafa Carvajal
Business is like life, so death is part of the equation.
In his 2005 Stanford commencement speech, Steve Jobs spoke about death. As a big fan of Apple products and owner of lots of them, I have great admiration for what Steve Jobs did and how Apple has changed my life – for better or for worse.
Many products and businesses have died as Apple and other tech companies bred life into new technologies. Remember the Walkman and Sony? How about the now almost dead iconic Kodak - whose cameras and film captured my life growing up with my family and friends in Costa Rica? They have either died or will soon.
Will the same happen to print? I don’t know the answer to that, but my hypothesis is that it will not yet. However, print will for certain continue to be challenged by new technologies such as the iPad and other tablets, the iPhone and other smartphones, the ever evolving web, and technologies that will for sure appear in the coming years. Therefore, as the owner and publisher of Wire Magazine striving to deliver great content to you, our readers, I stay awake late at night sometimes thinking about what I need to do differently to stay current and relevant.
If my business thrives, Wire Magazine will live on for another 25 years. It will also eventually outlive me, like Apple outlived Steve Jobs. For that to happen, I need to understand what is happening in my industry and constantly adapt and change to stay alive. That is what I have been working on in preparation for 2012. Even though we are a small business – and not part of a larger media conglomerate – we still have to evolve to thrive. Remember when Apple was so rotten people thought it was going to die? Well it didn’t, and today it stands as King of the Hill.
In 2012 you will see the implementation of several new growth strategies and technology initiatives at Wire Magazine andWire Media Group. Our goal is to deliver the best content possible to you through the means you prefer to use. That will definitely include print, the web, social media, mobile, and events. Wire also needs the continued support of our readers, our advertisers, and everyone who contributes every week to making what we do happen. I never take that support for granted, and I am always very appreciative for it. So thank you for providing it, and please continue to help us grow and improve as we strive to put our limited resources to best use so Wire can live long and prosper.
As Steve Jobs said in his now famous speech, “No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.”
I believe print won’t die, but we must learn to co-exist and thrive in a completely new environment driven by new technologies. In his speech Steve Jobs reminded us that, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
Steve also noted something really profound for my business, “When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and Polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.”
We at Wire plan to “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish,” so Wire Media Group can continue growing and evolving in this ever-changing world of ours.
Feel free to stop us on the streets of Miami and the Beaches and share your thoughts and ideas with Wire Magazine. We welcome your feedback and suggestions to continue providing great lifestyle content for our readers!
